Q + A

WHAT IS A MEDIATOR?

A mediator is a person who intervenes to help when people are in the middle of a conflict. They are often employed when parties feel stuck or distraught by the negative consequences of ongoing conflict.

WHAT IS TRANSFORMATIVE MEDIATION?

Transformative mediation is a style of conflict management that puts the power of resolution in the hands of confident and connected participants. It focuses on encouraging strength and empowerment for individuals while also promoting relative compassion and connection. Most conflict occurs in a downward spiral that gains speed through a sense of powerlessness and alienation. Transformative mediation aids in reversing this downward spiral.

This style of mediation has been gaining traction in the field of dispute resolution since the 1970s, and has become more popular as studies have proven its overall effectiveness in both the private and public spheres.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

  • You can expect me to be respectful, non-judgement, non-partisan and neutral in position throughout the mediation process.

  • You are expected to maintain a sense of responsibility for the mediation process and its outcomes.

  • You can expect to enter a process in which you will likely become more aware of your own inner resourcefulness as well as hidden opportunities and available choices within the conflict.

WHAT SHOULD I NOT EXPECT?

  • I will not promote any particular agenda, meaning I am not here to promote negotiations, solutions or any relational outcomes beyond whatever the participants are consciously choosing for themselves.

  • I am not a therapist or mental health professional, so I will not be responsible for diagnosing or even affirming any previously diagnosed conditions.

  • I cannot guarantee any particular outcomes, as the nature and conditions of transformational mediation do not permit me to do so.

HOW WILL I KNOW IT’S WORKING?

Transformative mediation facilitates the shifting of the nature and pattern of conflict itself. You’ll know it’s working if:

  • The conflict is moving into a new pattern: less of a spiral towards destruction and demonization and instead moving towards regeneration, constructiveness, and compassion.

  • You can more easily recognize yourself (your caring character, patience, willpower, etc) within the conflict, rather than feeling disassociated or incongruent.

  • You feel more confident expressing yourself, voicing your stance and clear in your ability to make choices from within the conflict.

  • You’re able to feel compassion towards the other person and see them in their humanity, regardless of whether there is still active conflict or emerging resolution.

  • You and the other party are discovering new terms for future relating that were not previously available.

  • You are learning new tools for navigating future conflict.
